Visual Artist Search – Black Girls Matters Coalition

This project is a collaborative effort between Collective Resistance and the Black Girls Matter Miami Coalition.

This position is for Miami/South Florida-based applicants.

Black Girls Matter Miami Coalition is led by an intergenerational group of Black women, girls, and gender nonconforming youth. We support the leadership of Black girls and GNC young people to heal, be heard, transform communities, and join the movement for Black liberation.

Collective Resistance is a time travel project that brings together black, indigenous, and latinx women and girls from different regions of the US, to together break through systems of oppression by traveling through time to uplift erased and stolen histories, visualize collective revolutionary futures, and share liberatory strategies and tactics across silos.

As part of this project, groups of participants are currently traveling to the past, and participating in a series of creative workshops aimed at documenting, recreating, re-casting, and reframing stolen moments in history, as a form of connection, hope and resistance. Stories, oral histories, records and research on the women and girls who have come before them – whether they are activists a generation removed or ancestors from long ago – are being collected. Pulling these narratives together, this series of workshops will culminate in a collaborative media process. Participants will decide which moments of their past histories they wish to re-create and work with a visual artist to design a series of images, representing the moments of history that were never documented as they re-imagine them – lending faces and visuals of moments in time, engaging viewers in remembering. These images will be accompanied by written narratives, additional media, and other forms of radical storytelling.

Black Girls Matter Coalition is seeking a visual artist with experience in collaborative or co-creation processes to work with participants in this phase of the project, to authentically and powerfully translate their re-imaginings of the past into a series of visual art pieces that can be shared digitally.
