As part of our #BlackAugust series, we’re sharing knowledge and lessons about Black revolutionary figures past and present. Today’s revolutionary is #ANGELADAVIS. Previously we shared abolitionist #GeorgeJackson’s history organizing within #SoledadPrison, and that Angela Davis had been targeted and added to the FBI’s most wanted list for owning the guns used during the Marin courthouse takeover, which organizers intended to lead to the release of the Soledad Brothers (George Jackson, Fleeta Drumgo, and John Clutchette).

Davis, who had studied philosophy in East and West Berlin before moving back to the united states, taught philosophy and was a vocal supporter of the #Antiwar Vietnam movement and #BlackPanthers. After the Marin courthouse takeover, she spent 18 months imprisoned before being found not guilty on all charges. Davis was one of the leading figures campaigning to free George Jackson, and they wrote to one another during his imprisonment.

Angela Davis continues to be committed to the importance of political education, especially within prisons. Davis teaches how #neoliberalism, global #capitalism, and american exceptionalism lead to isolation and deepened structural inequality. At a time when the prison industrial complex steals the labor and humanity of its victims and communities, we must remember to dream with Angela Davis as she calls on us to imagine a "future that will allow us to begin to move beyond capitalism." That future is abolitionist, care-based, and community-centered.

We start this year of #BlackAugust with a reminder We start this year of #BlackAugust with a reminder that this month is a time we can dedicate to studying lessons from abolitionists with the hope of bringing those lessons forward. 1970: In retaliation for his brother being sentenced from 1 year to life for allegedly robbing a gas station at gunpoint, Jonathan Jackson freed prisoners in a Marin County courtroom, armed them, and held a DA and 3 jurors hostage demanding the release of his brother George Jackson. He, along with the hostages, were gunned down by police. Following this, Black August began in 1971 after the assassination of the Black Panther field marshall #GeorgeJackson and fellow radicals in retaliation for his radical politics and organizing within San Quentin (Soledad) prison. In 1979, imprisoned people at San Quentin commemorated the assassinations by studying the resistance of Black people over the centuries.

Why is Black August relevant today? Because we still struggle for abolition and collective freedom! When getting grounded in the remembrance of all political prisoners, it is especially necessary to be mindful of those who take care of community, particularly during the incarceration of our loved ones. Black women and femmes historically hold this work down on the inside and outside of prison industrial complexes.

During this week’s NYC Staff meeting, as a groun During this week’s NYC Staff meeting, as a grounding exercise, we contemplated works of art that politicized us and propelled us into social justice work as organizers. Responses included Assata Shakur’s autobiography Assata, an offensive workshop taught about enslaved Black people blaming their enslavement on choice🙄, Pamela Council’s exhibit on Flojo’s nails, art depicting the Middle Passage, and seeing photographs of free Black family members living their best life. Can you remember a time when art inspired you to organize and join movement work?

Earlier this month, we had our NYC staff meeting o Earlier this month, we had our NYC staff meeting outside at the park! After our grounding, where our NYC Programs Director Kim pulled a card from an affirmation deck to reflect on cycles of urgency and rest, we had a plant swap! Each person was gifted a plant and asked to reflect on how we can strengthen organizing tactics by taking guidance from plants, and thus we discussed biomimicry! Biomimicry is a means of pulling strategy inspiration from nature. Plants strengthen, transform, and sustain ecosystems. We can look to plants to learn strategies that strengthen, transform, and sustain our communities and movements - Have you watered your plants today?

Repost from @free_chrystul • Update! [July 6th] Repost from @free_chrystul
•
Update! [July 6th] the Wisconsin Supreme Court announced a 4-3 ruling related to the state’s affirmative defense law. This ruling means Chrystul and her legal team will have the opportunity to present evidence in trial that the crimes she is charged with were a direct result of the violence she experienced.

This is good news for Chrystul and other survivors who have been criminalized for defending themselves in our state. We will update you regarding next steps in her case. We hope that this decision will propel the District Attorney to drop the charges entirely and allow Chrystul to move on with her life and healing. Please contact Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley to demand that he drop the charges against Chrystul by calling 262-653-2400 or Michael.Graveley@da.wisconsin.gov.

Earlier this month we returned to the office amid Earlier this month we returned to the office amid further political upheaval, which doesn’t feel so great! To remedy this, we embraced ways of getting grounded with one another by sharing space, joy, and collective healing. We are continuing to respond with tenderness towards one another and are identifying ways of looking at the opportunities to plug in and grow our skillsets as a response. At a time when doom scrolling is the norm, moving intentionally and being grounded in the now is our strategy to prevent feeling overwhelmed - this also further reflects the need to practice work/life balance. Do you have a strategy you like to utilize when you can identify feeling overwhelmed?
